Overview
H-SL grew out of the decision of one person, John Bangura, to abandon his plan to seek revenge for the murder of nine family members and kin during the civil war in Sierra Leone.
John's transformation led to him building a core team of Sierra Leoneans ready to risk their lives to help free their country from the ravages of war, corruption and poverty. Read more.
H-SL is a locally based peace and development organisation. The central aim of its work is to bring fundamental change in people's motives and attitudes, without which long-lasting peace and development cannot be achieved.
Since 2000 it has been registered in Sierra Leone as a Non Governmental Organisation and is affiliated to Initiatives of Change – International. H-SL's non partisan and non political approach has enabled it to partner with a wide spectrum of organisations.
To date, H-SL has concentrated its efforts in three main areas:
1. Moral Foundations for Democracy (MFD) – a human development programme for reconciliation and transformation – for the Sierra Leone Police (SLP), Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) and Civil Society.
2. Clean Elections Campaign (CEC) – a good governance programme to help free the electoral process from illegal manipulation, violence and corrupt practices.
3. Mutual Farming for Peace Building and Reconciliation – a rice-cultivation pilot project to bring reconciliation between ex-combatants and the local community. For further information see Hope-Sierra Leone website

Symbolic Reparations report now available>>
Over a period of 8 months (March - October 2009) Hope-Sierra Leone was contracted to implement a particular part of the National Reparations Programme in Sierra Leone, in partnership with the National Commission for Social Action (NaCSA). Hope-Sierra Leone first organised suitable events to remember 23rd March 1991. On this day 14 people were massacred in Bomaru, a town near the Liberian border. This marked the beginning of a civil war that lasted for nearly 11 years. Following the heartfelt response to this programme, Hope-SL planned and delivered Symbolic Reparations events in 17 Chiefdoms in 5 Districts in the country. Download report in PDF 1 February 2010
A report on the memorial events in Bomaru is now available, together with a much longer report on the symbolic reparations programme that Hope-SL, in partnership with NaCSA, completed successfully. Download report in PDF 1 February 2010
